The Indigenous Youth Intake Counsellor, located within the Native Youth Health & Wellness Clinic at UNYA, supports self-identifying Indigenous youth aged 13-24. As the primary contact for inquiries about UNYA’s counselling program, the Counsellor manages new referrals, the waitlist, and provides drop-in services for youth. They also offer personalized, one-on-one counselling support, focusing on a youth-centered approach tailored to each individual’s healing journey.
What Does This Program Offer?
- For self-identifying Indigenous youth aged 13-24 seeking one-on-one support on their healing journey. Youth receive emotional and cultural guidance throughout their counselling process, focusing on building strengths and developing skills that foster positive mental health.
- Drop-in counselling services are available for youth who are waiting to be matched with an UNYA counsellor or youth who need immediate access to support.
- The Counsellor creates a safe, welcoming space where youth’s voices and strengths are at the forefront. They support youth in exploring topics such as emotional regulation, self-awareness, and positive coping strategies. Additionally, the Counsellor engages in community outreach, connecting youth to cultural workshops, events, and ceremonies.
In this work we collaborate with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and learn from youth themselves to understand what culture means to them and how they wish to shape their own practices. The program provides access to traditional medicines and cultural learning opportunities, in partnership with UNYA’s Cultural Wellness Counsellors and community members.
